When searching to buy a convertible crib for your baby, there are many things that parents should look for. Most new parents look for a crib that has a nice design and matches their nursery. The truth is, there are many more things to look at other than just the colour or the crib design.
In recent years, and especially during the last two years, there were many product recalls by crib manufacturers in the North American markets, nearly all of these recalls were due to safety issues. During those years, the C.P.S.C (Consumer Product Safety Commission) have formed standards for baby cribs. It was a long process that took many years, but now we (in North America) have a state of the art mandatory standards system that describes exactly what safety measures crib manufacturers need to follow.
Cribs
Beginning June 28, 2011 all cribs must comply with new and improved federal safety standards. The most remarkable change is the elimination of drop side crib. These kinds of cribs will not be approved for use, sell or resell anymore. Read the full report of the CPSC about the cribs new standards. Apparently, that an increase number of accidents during the last few years which involved “drop side cribs” led to forbid their use in the American market. It will be a life saver for parents, who will buy crib after June, 2011. They will know for sure that the crib they just bought complies with the new safety masseurs, but if you read this, and you are searching to buy a crib which will be safe to use and comply with the future standards, what should you do? How can you ensure that the crib you consider to buy is safe for your little one? You won’t know by looking at the crib if it was produce by the new guidelines, but what you can do is ask the manufacturer if the specific model you consider to purchase complies with 16 CFR 1219 or 16 CFR 1220 CPSC guidelines. If it does, you can be assured that it is safe to buy that crib.
If you already have a drop side crib, you can check if the specific manufacturer issue recalls for your crib, or does he offer immobilizers for that crib model. The immobilizer is a device that prevents from the drop side to be accidentally break up from the main construction of the crib. Please visit the cribs recall center to make sure if your crib is dangerous to use.
On this website, we do our best to ensure that all the convertible cribs we have on our selection are risk free, but as we mentioned there are many cribs in the market which currently don’t comply with the new guidelines, so please always make sure that the crib is safe for use.
If you already have a crib, and you think to give it away or sell it, please note that the CPSC recommends that old crib owners will disparate the crib and not sell or transfer it to anyone else. These cribs consider being dangerous and are not recommended for use.
